Help Save A Class 60
Welcome to the Class 60 Preservation Group
The Class 60 Preservation Group is dedicated to the preservation and operation of a working example of the Class 60 “Tugs” Locomotive for the public to enjoy. We also want to help promote the interest and history in our industrial rail history.
The Class 60 Preservation Group is a non profit organisation with all money raised being put back into the locomotives purchase, restoration, maintenance and running to preserve it for future generations.
With an uncertain future for the class especially the locomotives in Toton’s sidings and scrap line, a group of enthusiasts have come together with the aim of preserving a member of the class, therefore saving it from the cutters torch and with this Class 60 Preservation Group was formed.
The Class 60 Preservation Group is run purely on a voluntary basis with memberships getting early access to our progress, vlogs, latest news and a certificate of membership. All members are also invited to have their say and contribution of ideas on the locomotive.
Within the group we aim to have the locomotive restored into full mainline condition so therefore it can be used to haul passenger charters across the country. This we believe will share the importance of the last locomotives ordered and commissioned by British Rail before the privatisation of the railway.
We aim to develop a dual mode braking system for the locomotive as currently they run solely on air brakes. This would therefore mean that having the dual brake system, the locomotive would be able to haul both air and vacuum braked rolling stock as this is because the majority of the heritage railways use vacuumed brake coaching stock and therefore means the Class 60 would be compatible all types of braked carriages.
Our aim for the locomotive is to be fully restored and back on the heritage scene with the first phase of restoration taking 2-5 years depending on funding, parts availability and volunteers .
The Class 60 Preservation Group is committed to restoring and maintaining the loco to the highest, most professional quality and standard. This is helped by thorough documentation and logged maintenance schedules with both oil changes and services being completed before the manufacturers recommendations. We also have full CAD Design, CNC Lathes and Milling Machines to help up keep the locomotive to the highest maintenance.
However, to maintain our commitment to the locomotive we need a steady flow of income brought in by our memberships, clothing, books and memorabilia sales which can be found on our online store. For more expensive repairs, spares materials and re manufacturing of obsolete parts, we rely on regular donations from the public and members to keep this achieved.
You can help us by joining the Class 60 Preservation Group with a membership, sending occasional or regular donations, which would enable us to help preserve an important piece of history for future generations to enjoy.
